I have heard that I should store my keel hydraulic cylinder upright when the boat is not being used. Ok, which end is the top? The end that attaches to the keel raising cable or the stern end?

yeah, it's actually a backstay adjuster made to be used vertically. storing it that way keeps to fluid from getting air bubbles

Ahhh again the voice of experience. I read the repair description but now I understand the reason for the repair.

When you sail with the centre board all the way down or put the boat away at end of season do you leave the release valve open or closed or maybe it doesn’t matter? The manual as I recall seems only to refer to trailering and releasing all load on cylinder

I don't think it matters - but I always close the valve when sailing - one less thing to do in a hurry
