I just bought a 1992 Catalina 42 mkII. It has 50 hp Yanmar and 38 gal. fuel tank. I am sailing/motoring it from San Diego to San Francisco on Sunday. What is the recommended cruising rpm? Estimated speed under power at cruising rpm? Fuel consumption at cruising rpm? I would like to estimate range.

Rule of thumb for displacement boats. 50% power (50% redline) yields 2/3 of hull speed. [its also its most long lived power setting]
LWL for the 42 is reported to be 36' so estimate hull speed is 8. look for around 5.5
with only 38 gal, its looks like ~280 miles is its max range. (assuming 0.39 lb/hr/hp)
Response mostly wrong. 50 percent of max rpm is not 50 percent power. 80 percent rpm closer. Go to yanmar site and they have fuel versus rpm. Motored from cabo to San Diego at .6 gph 1800 rpm at 5.5 k assuming flat water. Really averaged 5 knots. Yanmar recommends 80 percent rpm but I burned 1.4 gph at 7.1 knots.
I have hull 615, Catalina 42 MKII - I get about 220 nm per full tank. Currents and headwinds can affect the range. Always bring along a few extra cans if your destination approaches max range.
