Faulty transducer or faulty instrument?

My depth instrument, which has worked just fine until recently, will light up as usual when turned on but just show dashes instead of a depth. Is there an easy, simple way to tell if the problem is the transducer or the instrument? The boat is in the water.

Thanks!

I think there are amp readings for each wire. Find out from the manufacturer what they are suppose to be and you can check if you are getting correct readings.

You could start with the easy things - pull the transducer from inside (have a plug or rag for the hole handy) and make sure the bottom is clean, then check the connections all the way from the transducer to the instrument.

What instrument set, model, and what age?
Did you recently have the bottom repainted with anti-fouling paint; and did they cover the transducer?
How is the transducer installed? (e.g., does it shoot through the hull [holeless], or does it have a sleeve where you can pull it; etc.)
