Engine trouble 3YM20

Catalina 309 Port Moresby
Hi
I have a 309 (made in 2006). The Yanmar 3YM20 engine has been blowing black dobs out the back when I add power - above about 2,000 revs and I loose power when this occurs.

I have found:
1) the air filter - the black foam material surrounding a holed metal cone had almost completely perished and I would guess has been sucked into the motor. Now replaced.
2) it was suggested to replace the exhaust mixing elbow as this can get clogged. I seem to have an upside down 'U' shaped replacement one made of cast metal, fitted to my boat that does not look like the original which is only slightly bent and made of tubing.
3) someone else suggested it was the fuel injectors have carbon deposit on them (perhaps from the burning foam air filter!)

1) why do they make an air filter that deteriorates in such a way that they disappear into the engine?
2) does a blocked exhaust elbow cause black smoke and unburnt fuel? And do other Catalina 309's have a steel tube and only slightly bent elbow fitted?
3) can you clean the fuel injector nozzles?

Hope some of you guys have some experience in the area - I live in Port Moresby PNG where there are few specialist marine engineers who know about small sailboat engines.

answers

Some kind experienced sailors answered parts 2 & 3 on another thread.
The problem was caused by a clogged up and corroded exhaust mixer - thanks JSalley and Micheeal

2) The Catalina installed Yanmar is below the waterline and should use the 'U' shaped exhaust mixer:

Yanmar Service manual page 173. The part numbers are:
104214-13521 Mixing Elbow
104214-13580 Exhaust Joint
128370-13201 Gasket

The diagram attached shows the parts - both the 'U' shaped and the 'slightly bent'.
