i am thinking of installing a 5" - 6" clean-out / hatch on our fresh water tank. Looking to have access to the tank for periodic clean outs. Has anyone done that, and are there other ideas/recommendations?

Why?

Annual chlorine shocking as described by Peggy Hall in her book on this site has kept our whole fresh water system sweet and fresh for 17 summers. That includes the aluminum tank.

I agree with David. I use Peggy's annual maintenance but have also installed a SafeH20 filter and UV unit - the 500 model. Just ordered my filters and UV light replacement last week - $53. Will be dewinterizing in two weeks and doing the water maintenance then. We use on-board water for everything and have no problems. Have spent 1017 days on-board since 2003 using this system and couldn't be more pleased. Put the SafeH2O system on in 2013 before a long cruise. Felt very safe with multiple water sources from Kentucky Lake to SW Florida and return.
