Oday 25 Trailer at home, then MEXICO!
Looking for like minded (laid-back, relaxed) sailors to help us explore the Channel Islands National Park area, launching from LA area in mid-june, exploring through the end of the month. We are beginning/intermediate sailors, on our new-to-us O'Day 25. Would love folks who have traveled and sailed in this area!

Let me know if interested, or if you have any connections on who might be interested to join us.

That sounds like an absolute blast. I wish my wife and I were going to have the time. I know you'll have fun.
I've never sailed the Pacific coast. It looks drop-dead gorgeous.

That sounds like an ambitious trip on a small boat. I assume you are looking for a buddy boat opportunity?

The closest Park anchorage at Santa Barbara Island (SBI) is about 46 n.mi. WSW of San Pedro. The prevailing winds are westerly in summer, as well as at just about any other time of the year. Beyond SBI, it's about 40-45 n.mi. to Santa Cruz Island's south or east coast which lies northwesterly. This is all across pretty much open sea. The less direct but usually more "comfortable" route (for the laid-back sailor :D) is to travel nearer the coast & across Santa Monica Bay to Paradise Cove & anchor the night, then up to Channel Islands or Ventura harbor the next day; spend the second night at a marina. Then head across the East Santa Barbara Channel 18 n.mi. to Little Scorpion Anchorage, the closest one, and start the exploration from there. I made five legs along that latter route in 2017 (but without stopping)--down & back from Ventura Harbor to Long Beach; down & back once again, and then down to relocate the Bavaria in Alamitos Bay on December 18. When heading up it's best to be underway early-I mean by 0600. If lucky you'll be dropping the hook by the time the afternoon winds start filling in from your direction of travel.

That's what we were kind of thinking - might trailer her up to Santa Barbara, and launch there - unless you think the route to LA to Santa Barbara would be good learning sailing - which we are all about. Looking at the crossing that's about 14-15 nm from mainland.

First boat, but not first sail - we were crew on a 40' cat from SD to Cabo (Baja Ha Ha) - planning on getting LOTS of practice on our boat before this adventure, including two weeks immediately before in CA waters near LA and north

Santa Barbara Island is a wonderful destination; make it if you can. If you decide to trailer and launch at Santa Barbara Harbor you'll be sailing in the trough to the (Santa Cruz) island and back. You'll have a better (i.e., somewhat easier) choice of destinations on the north coast of Santa Cruz Island leaving from there rather than Ventura. The most popular site is Pelican Bay; however, Prisoners, a short distance SE, has more room. Fry's, a short distance NW of Pelican Bay is very nice, but usually requires bow and stern anchoring as it is small.

Perhaps the best practice run for your trip to the northern Channel Islands is to "sail" to Emerald Cove at Santa Catalina Island and anchor SE of the mooring field in the lee of Indian Rocks in about 70 ft. Stay a night or two, then motor up to Santa Barbara Island which is about 25 n.mi. from there and spend a couple of nights at Landing Cove anchored in about 30 ft. Then sail home to San Pedro. That all takes about 5 days. If you can do that, you'll probably be as ready as most people are who go there to the CI Park their first time. You'll likely want a "flopper-stopper" along.

A somewhat less challenging practice option would be to sail to Buttonshell Cove in the lee of Long Point at Santa Catalina Island and anchor there somewhere in the relatively narrow strip between about 70 and 25 ft. Closer inshore in the 25-ft depth area you should be able to practice deploying and recovering a stern anchor (in addition to the bower), but take care as there are some rocks close in, I believe. Stay there a couple of nights then go up to Emerald Bay for a couple of nights as described, then home.

We do have two anchors, so sounds like Pelican Bay might be a good option. Thanks for the tips!

Awesome - which leads to a quick question re: anchoring....I assume anything outside of a slip or mooring is free? We sure like that idea, and plan to use that option when in Mexico - anchor for a week - go into the marina for a night or two for laundry, showers, etc. Also, dinghy dock fees/availability where you describe?

There are no dinghy docks (save one at Prisoners), marinas, or boater services in the northern Channel Islands (i.e., the Park); there also are no mooring cans. It is effectively a wilderness area. It's all anchoring so there are no charges. However, if you wish to go ashore anywhere in the western 2/3 of Santa Cruz Island, including at Pelican Bay and Fry's, you need to purchase a permit from the Nature Conservancy. Elsewhere (i.e., the NP) you can go ashore w/o a permit. At Catalina Island there are mooring cans you may pay to use, including at the places I mention above. At Isthmus Cove, Catalina Island, there is a dinghy dock for going ashore, and there are facilities ashore for the things you mention.

Also, FYI--no pets are allowed on any of the Park islands; but can come ashore at Catalina Island.

The company Island Packers out of Ventura Harbor runs day trips to each of the islands sometime during the year. Most and many go to Anacapa and Santa Cruz islands--e.g., Scorpion Ranch and Prisoners Harbor. Consider taking a ride out there b/f making your boat trip; see what you're letting yourself in for!
