Catalina Steering issue

Was out on the Bay a few weeks ago wind picked up (white caps) and my steering started acting up. On trying to back into slip lost control (a lot of play in steering. Contacted Edson and they sent me a check list. On inspection it was a failure of the 3/8" fiberglass bulk head where the the Edson bracket attaches at the stern under cockpit. A ~4" section og the bulk head broke off leaving the cable very slack, hence the steering issue

Has any one had this happen to them. 3/8" seams a little thin for a mechanism under such stress. Does Catalina have a fix for this? Sent a question to them. No response yet

I am thinking of having a reinforcing plate made.
