when I look around Dana Point I think "The weather's perfect and the bartenders know my name, what else can you want ?"
Not only do they know your name, I hear that they don't even ask for your credit card anymore, because they've inadvertently memorized the number.
And the expiration date.
And the 3 digit code on the back.

I don't know "pasties" but, That's an "empanada",just missing the guacamole.
A dockmate named his boat "Uff Da !!", I suspect he may be a closet "Yooper".

And yet, Domino's will only deliver a pizza to an empty parking lot at the harbor in the middle of the night if you use Skipper's phone so they know it's legit.

Side note: Nobody from California calls the state "Cali". I never hear it unless I'm out of state. Or on the Internet :)

That's nice.
I've been in Commiefornia for 51 years. Born in Santa Barbara, lived there then Ventura for decades, then
Huntington Beach, then Dana Point.
I've been in and among Southern California surfer towns my whole life.
Even when I lived in the east for 4.5 years, my heart and mind were in wacko land.
And the first time I ever heard "Cali" was in Virginia in 2010. Then I started to notice the word as I traveled in the east.
Never heard it growing up here or since.
But, we were in difference circles.
Anyway, I sidetracked from the original post.

It's kind of equivalent to referring to The City as "Frisco." San Franciscans don't like it much; I can't say I do either. Cali might have come from the locals' use of the word Cal, as in "Cal" [Berkeley] referring to the university. For example, I attended Cal, or I graduated from Cal. Then, of course, there's the Cal line of yachts. When I lived in Florida, I'd refer to California as the "Big CA"; never used the term Cali in or out of the state, nor does anyone I know when speaking to me. Lived here most of my life since 12; high school in the [Big] Valley; college in southern California, job here the last 18 yr.

I'm always amused when folks from San Fransisco say they are from "Northern California". apparently their map looks different than mine. ;)

But that's an "official" nickname, isn't it --- "The Buckeye State"? The "official" nickname for California is "The Golden State." Compare that with "The Beaver State"; a.k.a.-- the land of ducks.
