Buffleheads Are Back!

I’m sure many have heard the stories of how the swallows return to the mission at San Juan Capistrano each spring. Now something new to look forward to— the buffleheads have returned to Newport Beach for the winter. Buffleheads are very cute little ducks, snowy white at back of the head. Normally they are seen in upland wooded areas of western North America, perhaps beyond. In the fall and winter some visit the estuaries of Southern California. Buffleheads and the Morning Star are early heralds of the coming season. Far more welcome than the endless, run-on Christmas tunes that now accost us in stores like WM and over broadcast stations.

I've been to Capistrano and seen the swallows return. We've got buffleheads returning to the Victoria area too. I guess it's true that we have a California climate in this area.
