I can tell you one thing - watch your fingers.. I bought one once, and in opening/closing it, I felt it very easy to amputate one unintentionally. I wound up returning it.

I would think it is very effective at holding in certain bottoms - but don't have any first hand experience as far as that goes.

I've heard it dismissed out of hand many times, but I don't know of any testing. I can think of a number of reasons why it would be completely out of its weight class in a competitions with NG anchors.
  • Flukes exposed to rode fouling.
  • Cannot bury deep.
  • Cannot rotate without tripping.
Curiously, it might actually be superior on river gravel. I'd bet it's a good lunch hook... but sailors don't really use lunch hooks.
