How much bottom paint should I order to put 2 coats plus 3 on water line on Catalina 36 wing keel? Also will epoxy ahear to bare sanded lead keel? Thanks, Peter. Carrabelle Fl

It depends on the bottom paint, and how it's applied. I'm in fresh water using VC17, so my answer (4 qt per coat) means absolutely nothing to you.

I have a C36 fin keel. Two gallons did one coat plus a second on waterline and keel and rudder leading edges.

I hope that helps. I imagine you'd have to double it. It will get expensive!

The "average" gallon can of bottom paint typically covers about 400 sq ft (depending on application type, etc.). You can figure out the area you need to cover as follows: LOA x Max Beam x .85 and go from there.

That works out to be wrong by a factor of two, in my experience. I did 36x12x.85 and got 367. Yet, it takes me almost two gallons to coat the bottom. I usually use Interlux Micron CSC or something similar. I roll it on.

I always used 3 qts Trinidad with an extra swipe at the waterline on my C-22.

The formula I quoted should have stated "LWL" rather than "LOA." That should result in a coverage area of a bit more than 316 sq. ft. on your boat. What did the coverage on the paint you used state a gallon would cover? Not sure what your application mode was, but requiring almost 2 gals to cover that seems bizarre to me. I can apply a single coat of bottom paint my H28.5 with a 1/4" roller using about 65% of one gallon, for example.

Thanks Warren. You might be right, I might be mistaken on this. Inerlux states 396 sq. ft per gallon. Their formula is LOA x Beam X 0.85. That would be one gallon per coat for my C36. I certainly know I purchase two gallons when I do this, maybe my recollection about the number of coats is faulty. We do it every other year. I'll have to ask my wife to help refresh my memory.

Thanks all for your input. I use Pettit SR 60 Ablative on west coast of Fl and find it really works. This boat is new to us 36 Catalina, we had a tri before , thanks again. Peter Carrabelle Fl

To put ONE new, full, coat on my B323, I need to thin the gallon as per the label. Enough for a second layer on the waterline.
