Bimini Hater Alert

Yep, I’m one of them. I’ve tried, just to keep the Admiral content on windless hot days, but the costly custom Bimini available for our classic boat, interferes with the traveler if forward enough to cover the majority of the cockpit, and limits the view of the windex. Generally the only coverage is for me behind the helm. We’ve experimented and struggled to find a solution we could both live with.

Recently, while walking through Sam’s Club I saw this large Umbrella hanging from the ceiling and the mind gears started turning. The umbrella is called a Sportsbrella.

We now call it the Umbremini...or Biminabrella. It is only deployed while not under sail. Ok when floating or motoring on duldrum days, takes all of 15 seconds to set up or take down, and bungee to the toe rail or lifelines. Squeezes in nicely between split back stay and traveler, also can hang free from the boom. Shade for the desiccated and rain protection for the sponges. Covers the entire cockpit. Reasonably sturdy construction.

Hopefully they’ll have a color you can use.

Very cool, thanks for posting. Looks like they also have a smaller version that could be rail mounted.

Just what I had been looking for!
Found one at Bed Bath and Beyond and had a 20% off coupon. Worth a try, since I am another one of thos bimini haters.

We have been using these umbrellas at the beach for years. Very well made and last for about 2 seasons because we go to the beach a lot, usually for a week or more at a time. They originally had a thumb screw to adjust the height but it rusted. Now they have a plastic friction lock. Very good in wind up to 30mph.

Tried this out on our boat, didn't work out. Made a boom tent with a tarp until our new bimini is installed.
