The wiring inside of the float switch must have gotten water inside the connections & shorted out from moisture penetration. Those old Rule float switches are pretty stout & durable, but nothing lasts forever, & it's usually shorted wiring that does in electrical components. Just replace it with the same type switch, that way you can re-use the mounting screw & hole. By the way, seal the hole from the mounting really well with silicone caulk, or butyl tape. Water gets into the wood of the bilge through any hole drilled in through the thin fiberglass casing, & can & will cause rot to the bilge boards. The rot can work itself down into the plywood in the keel sump, & can contribute tot the famous Catalina smile, where a crack develops between the keel & the hull.
