On a B &R rig should shroud tension be near the upper limits rather than the lower limits to reduce headstay sag?

If you have no backstay on your B&R rig then headstay tension is controlled by the cap shrouds. Setting the cap shrouds at 25% of safe working load should give optimal headstay control. Shroud tension should be set with a tension gauge for proper adjustment. Lower shrouds and diagonals are used to control mast pre-bend and do not affect headstay tension.

Remember, in underpowered conditions, headstay sag produces power in the jib. On a 260, mainsheet tension will reduce headstay sag. Watch the headstay when sheeting in hard then easing off. You can see the difference.

In light air you can induce headstay sag by tensioning a spare halyard attached to the bow while easing off the mainsheet and switching to vang sheeting. This will pull the masthead forward helping to create better sail shape for the genoa in light air conditions.
