...generators to hook up to a 30-amp shore power cord to a boat?

http://t.harborfreight.com/engines-...g-watts-65-hp-212cc-generator-carb-63090.html

I am considering buying a generator to be able to run some power tools, etc at the boat yard, and would buy a bigger unit like this one if I could power the boat from a shore power cord plugged in to it. It has a 30 amp "RV" plug, but I don't think that it is the same as a marine shore power plug. Can the plug be swapped out to accept a 30-amp shore power cord?

Otherwise, I would probably get a smaller, portable generator (like the Honda E2000).

From the spec sheet it is 30 amp 240 volt. The 120 outlets are 20 amp. With this generator you wouldn't want to use the 30 amp unless you are wired for 240.

Yes RV plugs are different on the "shore" end but the vehicle end is generally the same as marine.

No. The twist-lock connection is rated for 13 amps.

Thanks for the quick replies Jim and Gunni. Sounds like a non-starter.

If you don't mind the noise one of the smaller Horrible Freight might not be that bad for job site use. Just use orange extension cords. I have a 6kw at the house for power outages. It does the job and since many of my neighbors also have generators nobody complains.

Big catch for me on that unit would be that it appears to be only 13amps on each 120v circuit(outlet). While this is the same as for the eu2000 Honda, many job site generators will be in the 16-20amp range (2000+ running watts and 2400-3000 surge). I have one with a similar size engine that is 2500 watts running (20.8amps), 3000 surge on 120v. That will run any pretty much any normal 120v tool.

If I was only going for a generator with 13amps I would take the Honda inverter that can run electronics, is generally quieter and appears to be physically smaller than this unit.

You can buy an adapter cord that pluses into the boat and attaches to a regular extension cord.....

The Honda "Companion" model has a 30 amp locking outlet like a shore power cord but cannot power it fully.. It is made to hook together with another Honda inverter gen to provide full power.. or you can make a "pigtail" connector with a 15 ampere plug for the gen end and a locking 30 amp end to power the boat subject to the power limitations of the generator.. That Honda will run most power tools..

The Honda 2000 is rated for a maximum of 13Aand change. It has 20A outlets to provide more connectivity options but still provides only 13A of power to be divided among the loads for each of the 2 plug in receptacles. The model with the 30A connector only offers another plug in option but the power output is still 13A. I believe part of the question is how to be able to connect a larger generator from Harbor Freight and the answer is yes you can use or make and adapter to connect to the generator at one end and the shorepower cable at the other. I would choose the Honda 2000 as you could also take it with you to have 120V when underway or at anchor.

Spec says the 30A plug is 240 V AC so no you can not just change it to a 30 A marine plug which is rated 30 A at 120 V AC without some rewiring. You need one hot leg one neutral and a ground for the marine plug!

Easiest solution is to get the 120 V AC to 30 A marine twistlock conversion cord and plug it into one of the 20 A iutlets. But remember you aren't getting anywhere near 20 A to the boat due to generstor limitations

Personally, I prefer a plastic tank, as they don't rust.
The negative is plastic can crack, so depending on use metal tanks may be better, or worse...

At home in the relative safety of a garage, I want a plastic tank as they don't rust.

my 2 cents...

The Honda EU2000i comes with a 30A receptacle rated for 120V. For the predator the 4 prong 30A receptacle is rated for 240V.

It has a 30 amp "RV" plug,
Im not sure where this thread went. but this was sort of interesting regarding the "RV" plug. I have an RV plug on the side of my house and its 110 VAC 30 amp. Ive opened it up and its just two 110VAC black/white/green wire sets connected together at the socket going back to two likely 20 amp breakers. I think the 110VAC 30 amp RV socket has the same set of B/W/G wires that the 110 VAC 30 amp twist lock L5-30 plug has but am not sure.

Anyhow, I wanted to use this 110 VAC plug on the side of the house (shown in the top picture) for powering 110VAC tools and was able to purchase the adapter in the bottom picture that allows standard 15/20 amp extensions cords to be plugged in.

Now with that adapter, I can plug in any extension cord.. could be 16 gauge. Well.. if I had a short at the end of that 16 gauge extension cord, it still goes back to a 30 amp fuse (or likely 40 amp). That is well past the current that extension cord is rated for and its possible the extension cord would catch fire.

So with everything you can purchase being so idiot proof now.. I was surprised that I was able to buy this adapter.. But Lowes had it.. I looked for a UL sticker on the adapter.. not to be found.. You can see some yellow letters molded into the part that says something like you should use this with a 15 amp breaker.. which I guess covers their axx for liability.

This is the adapter that I use on my new generator purchased from Amazon.

Works well with my generator. Very similar to the Predator.

That is exactly what I was hoping to do. Run the generator and hook up the boat shore power cord so I could charge the boat batts and use a few small 110 volt electrical tools (shop vac, polisher, etc.) while the boat is on the hard and there is no AC power at the marina.

Thanks for this. Exactly what I was looking for.
