Well, yeah! That's why I keep mine at the helm.
I don't always have a knife in my pocket, but I have taken to keeping one at the helm and at the mast; going back to the cockpit is too far, and I seem to need it more often up front (this was on my cruising cat, not the boat in my avitar).

I learned a lesson about this last time out. (The easy way, fortunately.) Launched at Crescent Beach, where there's a long, dredged channel through a shallow bay to reach open water. Mid way through the channel the engine died. I had just reorganized my anchor and rode set up to make it quicker and easier to deploy. If the same thing had happened on any previous trip I would have been in much more of a panic. Better lucky than good, eh?

SV Panope has done some pretty extensive tests anchoring in normal and emergency situations. It is pretty seeing how all the different anchors set. Definitely worth a few hours of YouTube if you haven’t seen any of them.
