Can any one tell me what 3 blade prop should be on a 1990 42 passage. just bought a 42 and performance under power ah... sucks. Pulled the boat today for new bottom paint and while cleaning up the prop noted it is a 17 x 9.5, I have tried all the calculators online and they are all different. I think I am under proped big time. ????

Hey John. Post a picture of the prop...
Welcome to the forum by the way.... A new to you boat.. Congrats.
One from New Bern? There were some boats there that had a bit of a high tide issue. Hope your boat was not one of the ones impacted.
I just re-propped this past January. Chose to install a CampbellSailor. Very pleased. Kelsey was a wizard in selecting a prop to fit my boat. Improved my power and sailing experience. Check out his site at http://www.westbynorth.com/

Hi John, our 1991 P42 came with a 18 RH 15 fixed three blade. Very pleased with its performance over the years. It does a good job in helping to maneuver her 35,000 pound displacement when needed. I always leave the transmission in neutral while under sail so as to let the prop spin freely. Under way we usually cruise at six to seven knots with the engine turning about 1,800 RPM. Nice.

My 1992 H42 passage with 62 hp Yanmar has a 18 x 13 rh 3 blade prop that pushes her along very well.

I had an 18x17 fixed three blade on my 75 hp Yanmar (H466). Went to a 20 x 14 three blade flexofold.

JohnAC,
I have a H42 2005 that I will be putting a folding prop on this spring. I have the original 3 blade on it now. Welcome to it after April 19 if interested.

Thanks, appreciate it but we are on the hard for ten day and was hoping to get something before we go back in.

Hi John,
I have a 2004 420P and concur... the stock prop sucked. Went with a Michigan 3 blade pitched at 15 degrees. I dont cruise at 1800 rpm cuz I want my Yanmar to last a long time but I get 6.5 to 7 kts at 75% of WOT or 2800 rpm. Maybe could have gone 14 and they told me no problem to change the pitch. Im happy with it. Its not a racing boat so I dont care about the drag.

And agree, easy to change in the water. Most divers can do it.

We have a 1994 Passage 42 with 4JH2-TE (62hp). When we bought the boat it had a 19 x 15 three-blade RH prop and wouldn't rev past 3400 RPMs WOT. Surveyor recommended repitching to 14". Followed the advice and now it hits 3600 at WOT which the surveyor said means it is the correct prop. So, we have a 19 x 14, which seems a bit of an oddball for Passage 42s but works well for us.

@JohnAC while it is nice to install on the hard, you can lap fit the prop on the shaft (https://marinehowto.com/lap-fitting-a-propeller/) and less likely to drop the key onto the marina muck.

It is not mandatory. Many a prop has been successfully installed by a diver while the boat is in the water.
There is virtually no reason to ever haul a boat to swap props, especially when dealing with sailboats. And as far as lap-fitting goes, there is virtually no reason to do that either, IMHO. I guarantee that 99.9% of all the boats you have ever seen in your entire life have never had that done and they aren't having any issues because of it.

We are in Florida now and on our way north, I had the prop that was on the boat re-pitched with reasonable improvement to performance (add 3 inches) but would still like to get the right prop. Did you get your folding prop and if so are still willing to part with the old one, where are you located and how much are you looking for. Thanks in advance John Collins
