Hello,
I am interested in a Hunter 356, 2002. The boat will be surveyed in march but I would like your opinion on the keel, I noticed that the metal in exposed and oxydated, just below the wing. Also, I noticed thin cracks near the keel joint.

Pretty typical Issues. Would not keep me from exploring the boat.

If it is an iron keel, the oxidation (rust) is easily removed and the keel resealed (there is no such thing as “oxydated”). As to the keel joint, check the bolt torque.

the 356 keel is lead and doesn't rust. just wear a dust mask, lightly scuff off any loose oxidation and bottom paint.
The keel is bolted and bedded in an adhesive compound, then faired with polyester fairing compound that is quite brittle - it's very common and not a problem. Great boat! we love ours.

Thanks, I am glad to learn that this is common and not a big problem. Also glad that know that the 356 is a great boat!

It lost its barrier coat due to sitting in the mud. You will have to sand it down, fill the holes with epoxy filler and fair, then apply 5–7 coats of the barrier coat material, then anti-foulant paint. Same issue and fix on the 2005 Hunter 46 I purchased 3 years ago, except the entire keel looked like that.
