Hi
New to sailing life long dream come true.
I bought a San Juan 21.
And happen to have a Honda bf9.9 out board.
The manual says it weighs 100 lbs.
Is that to heavy??

Nope, but you would not want any more weight than that. Stern will ride a bit lower, tho. How is the bracket/mount? Are the bolts backed up on the inside?
Fast little boat, but keep the board locked down on windy days.

Way too much for a 21 in my opinion. You only need half that, And your SJ will be happier.

So a 6hp Yamaha (perhaps long shaft)... would be excellent for a boat being sailed on the Columbia River or in a beautiful Idaho lake.

With all things boat, there are compromises.

On the waters of lake Coeur D'Alene the 4hp light weight motor (2 stroke) will be more then enough power to get you away from the dock/launch ramp and out on the water sailing.

Should you move to the Columbia River to test your sailing/cruising skills, you might want the more powerful 6hp 4stroke. It has more weight but balances that out better torque (to help power through the wind and current) and then there is the fuel efficiency / reduced emissions.

Key considerations from the above link:
  • Facing high winds can slow the boat down and here a larger motor will get the boat back up to hull speed.
  • Larger motors will allow you to get to hull speed without going full throttle so they can be quieter and have less vibration.
Check out this review pros/cons on 2 vs 4 stoke outboards.

Had a 54 lbs. 4 stroke 5 HP in one and the transom was able to handle the weight with some deflection. The stern squat was reasonable and the boat sailed well. Check the motor mount rating and reinforce the backing plate on the transom.
