My wife and I are from North Bend. Left in 1973, so unavailable for your needs. The Coos River bar is a pleasant experience in calm conditions, but an angry lion when the storm rollers come crashing in against the breakwater. Just open ocean out there.

Make a left and head for Bandon, a right for Winchester Bay or straight out for Hawaii. Hope you find some brave soul to accompany you and have fun.

I lived in the Coos Bay area from 73-76. :plus: On the Coos Bar. They have a CG station at Charleston. Lots of logs back in the 70’s filled the estuary and bay.

Tell us about your boat. Pictures.

Hired on with General Telephone Company of the Northwest in 1967. Met my wife Patti in 1968, then married her in 1969. Bought our first house in Simpson Heights and moved to Beaverton in 1973. A thriving area back then when Weyerhaeuser, Louisiana Pacific and Manasha were big players; all gone. Casino rules now.

Remember wandering the marina docks in Charleston and watching the big rollers smash against the breakwater after a storm. Great elk, deer and bird hunting area, plus fishing.

Wonder where he keeps his boat. Charleston or Coos Bay? Maybe he will post some pics. Spent a week there last year. Place has changed.

Yes it has. Logging, fishing, pulp mills all replaced by Casino as the industry resource. The casino just appears to be a way to recycle the money. It is tough down there on the coast. The possibility that they were to become a LNG terminal would have created some new jobs. The weed growing industry has thrived... Not sure how much goes into the Oregon market. I wonder if the dangers of hiking in the woods are the same after the legalization of pot. I know there were vast areas that I did not want to hike in.

Nice clean looking boat. How does she sail? A good sailing route from Coos Bay to Charleston and back. Much more room in the open ocean.

J,
Here is a link that includes info regarding the coastal trip you are considering.

Start today. Watch the weather patterns. Build up a practice looking at the ocean weather and work on predicting what might happen in the next several days Over the waters you plan to cross.

Consider using Windy.com.

Good luck.

Thank, @jssailem for posting my log of that trip.

@JCraig68 the trip was in August, so your weather patterns are going to be quite different in the springtime. The thing that will NOT be different is the timing of the bars. I found that by using multiple sources of information I was able to predict the time of the changes to the bars quite well. I used the local tide/current tables available at all of the harbors' harbormaster offices, my GPS, and the internet (noaa). Maybe they were off by as much as a half an hour, but that was good enough. I also found the heavy rains in the entire Columbia River Gorge that year (2016) made a BIG difference to the turn of the currents when we left Ilwaco heading north. The "smaller" rivers, not so much.

Good luck, I'd never "done" bars much before that, although I "practiced" for decades at the Golden Gate Bridge! :)
