keel ballast electra

My 1960/61 Pearson Electra (#19 hull) has a rigid centerboard/keel containing about a ton of lead. There are no fabrication drawings available for the model that I can find. Is there a simple procedure for removing the lead ballast? I am a competent mechanic and excellent equipment designer...
