Drilling a pedestal guard

Hope this idea that worked for me helps you. I needed to drill 2 holes on my pedestal guard. Being a round surface I KNEW that the drill bit would want to walk. So a nut was found that was just a tad larger ( ID) than the pilot hole drill bit. Used a pair of vise grips to grasp the nut and centered it over the reference mark on the guard. Viola ! worked great !

Good idea ! A center punch works great also. Position it where needed, Hit it sharply. It will create a perfect point to put the drill bit and will prevent that bit from walking.

SailRite has a tool like a clamp-on pipe tap for an ice maker hose, but is made to guide a drill bit.
