I had a great summer and really appreciated everyones answers and advice to my boat questions.
After taking the boat out of the water however, I discovered that the white (fibreglass?) on my rudder was peeling off of the wood core in places.
Can I just apply fibreglass sheet , sand it and paint it?

You can repair it. It looks like fibreglass cloth strip has come away from the leading edge of your rudder. Strip and sand the old stuff off to bare wood and reapply a new piece of cloth tape on it. You can apply the cloth with either fibreglass resin or epoxy resin. My personal preference is West epoxy but it is more expensive. In either case you will need to fair the repair. If you choose fibreglass fair with gelcoat. If with epoxy, use a fairing filler and paint over it. I have found that Tremclad exterior paints work well and are a lot less expensive than marine paint. No need to paint with gelcoat as long as you get the colour matching right.

Hope this helps.
