Seasons End

Season has come to an end for Seeker and I in the great white north of MN. Scheduled haul out was for Saturday the 10th. Got to the club a bit early as there were about 8 of us planning to haul out. Club manager informed us that the crane had stopped working again and even if it was, the thickness of the grease and the cold temps, it was 11F at 10am, made the crane move very slowly. He contracted a truck crane to be at the club from 10am - 2pm on Sunday. So my helpers and I stripped the gear, sails, and tidied up the lines for Sunday.

Got to the club on Sunday and there were already a few people there and the truck crane was setting up. We swarmed on boats, got masts down and boats on trailers. We hauled 8 boats in about 2 hours. Was a great example of sailors helping sailors, Our commodore was there also just helping everyone that needed it. Temps were better too, it was a balmy 29F on Sunday.

Seeker is now inside for a few months of a winters nap, hopefully we get ice out in April.

Nice snow storm today. Boat is still in the water. I think I'll pull the sails off on Saturday and let them put Thunderbird on blocks. The 6" to 8" that we're getting right now breaks the spell for sailing. We're thinking about skiing at Thanksgiving weekend instead.

BlueJ out today. And an even bigger 100 ton crane. These guys were total pros.

It was awesome to see how pro these guys were. Blue J swung very very little as she was plucked from the water and put on the trailer perfect the first try. A far cry from what most of us do with the club crane when we do it ourselves. When the batch of us hauled the previous Sunday, it was the same thing. Was amazing to watch.

Just got Bella Luna out Wednesday. The flooding finally receded to where we could operate the club crane. Had to break up some lake ice to get to the dock.

Was cool to watch the Pros at work. At WYC, boatowners operate our fixed 10,000lb crane themselves, with wildly differing levels of competency. I've never seen a boat dropped or slipped out of the slings yet, but I'm figuring its the odd-on thing to happen eventually.

Its Saturday and beautiful here at northern Barnegat Bay. Ward and I going out hopefully for a nice sail. Its still too early to haul Whitecaps. Lots of nice days left. I just hope that the whitecaps are not frostbite on my fingertips.

I saw Sun Dog in her slip yesterday and wondered where Ward was. I understand that there was some really nasty wind that came out of that storm. I saw a few mainsails blown out from their covers and also a boat cover that was damaged on a boat that had already been stored. Luckily, I didn't see any headsails blown out. Dickie told me winds up to 60 mph Thursday night. I felt bad for not going out on the bay Saturday, but next time I come down, it will be to put the storage cover on.

Sun Dog had her last sail Wednesday a week ago. It was supposed to have been hauled out last week but the weather didn't cooperate. Should be out this week, then I'll finish winterizing.
When Stu offered be a ride on Whitecap on Saturday I jumped on it. We had a great sail despite it being a little chilly. With winds 12-18 we had a brisk ride down to Cedar Creek and back, arriving in his slip just before sunset. We're hoping to get another sail in before he has to haul out.

You guys are smiling... well at least Stu is grinning... so it couldn't have been too bad.
Both looking a bit spiffy in your winter attire.

The end-of-season WYC banquet was last weekend, and right before the event Jodi and hosted a BlueJ party for crew and anyone else that had sailed with us this year. Great times, great people, and some nice glassware!
