O'Day 322 replacement sliding hatch

Has anyone replaced their sliding hatch on a 322 or similar boat (the horizontal sliding hatch, not the vertical hatch/pem boards).
My lexan hatch is cracked since I bought the boat, and I really need to replace it. I'm concerned that if I find a direct replacement, it'll cost me an arm and a leg. So, I'm also considering making one from wood and adding lexan inserts to let daylight in.
Has anyone done this kind of thing?

I just replaced my old original. It was 1/2” plexiglass, so I replaced it with the same. Carefully measured then some finishing. All is good

D&R Marine will sell you one for $750. Just talk to Rudy.
If you make one yourself, be sure to make it strong enough to stand on.

Did you add a bend to it? The original bends slightly up in the middle, I guess for strength?

Yea, sure I'll talk to Rudy, but I'm hoping to come in less than $750 if I can..

You can probably get a local plexiglass shop to make you one for less but it’ll be hard to get the curve right. Best to take the old one to them.

The bend in the plexi matches the curve of the cabin top. A replacement would have to have the same curve or it won’t slide.

Fortunately, mine is flat.. no bending needed.. The bending thing makes it a non-trivial job !

Use plexiglass( acrylic) not lexan(polycarbonate) lexan scratches easy, boat makers use acrylic. If you have a big enough oven put the sheet in with a piece of wood 2x2 in the middle. Heat between 275 to 350 degrees it will become soft and bend stay closer to 275 too hot and you will get bubbles

You’d need a really big oven to handle that slider.

A previous owner had replaced the slider on my O’Day 322 with a fiberglass or expoxy-covered hatch.

I really like it. If you look carefully, you can see it in this photo.

It has some arch to it, so rain runs off. It is robust enough for me to stand on.

@Mickstr,

Here are a few photos of the replacement hatch slider on my O’Day 322.
I also have the washboards, which can replace the doors, but I like the doors better.

I didn't do the replacement, so don’t have a lot of information.

Thanks Greg. Just for grins I'm going to get prices from local acrylic companies, as I do like the light that affords. But, if it's too costly, I may do what your PO did.

I have repaired the hatch boards on my 322 using west style epoxy with very careful cleaning and clamping of the pieces.
Also there is a very good Plastics Company in CT called Moderm Plastics. They may be willing to supply material or even make a replacement. They bend and machine acrylic and lexan sheet.

FYI, I'm getting one from Rudy for closer to 600. Just have to wait a spell for it to be fabricated in CA.
