It is not clear to me with the Hunter 216 mast plate where the pin should be inserted since there are 3 options... I have seen some opinions but not sure what is best... as well as I seen some discussions on the use of the wedge when sailing... my dealer only talked about the use of the wedge when rigging the boat in order to keep the mast stable when doing so... would love to know what is best...

I sailed it for years without a mast wedge. I added one in the last year, but don't think it matters at all for sail trim. It does eliminate the noise and creaks from the mast pumping in the waves, which is a plus. It is somewhat of a pain to push the block in place when there is tension, so I suggest you not tension any rigging until that is done.

I also have been pinning the mast to the most aft hole in the base plate. This year for some reason the mast seems to be too far aft in the opening and is about 1.25" away from the forward edge of the opening. The two pins in the hatch cover do not engage with the holes in the cuddy and the hatch cover is not retained and blows off by the wind when docked. Needless to say I am getting a lot of rain water into the boat. I was thinking to move the mast forward one hole on the base plate to try and correct the problem. Any opinions or suggestions?
The restraining pin that goes laterally across the partners opening should keep the mast well forward of the opening hatch. Is that missing on your boat? In addition, there is a chock support that engages with that pin and acts like wedges on larger boats to give a bit of pre-bend to the mast so it does not pump in the waves. I suggest if you mast is out of place, check the tuning guide, available on-line, with a Loos gauge. As far a rain water, I used to wrap a garbage bag around the mast and tape it to mast and deck with duck tape, prior to putting on the canvas snap cover. It wasn't elegant, but you could not see it after the canvas was in place.

Take a photo and post. I clicked on the site forum store and got a message about deciding the prescense of cookies. Cookies is the last thing should not be here and Dave Groshong advise owner to take that off
There is no pin going across the opening on my boat, can you send me a picture of what that looks like.
Sorry Dutchy, I sold that boat a couple years ago, but perhaps another owner could help. The un-threaded pin was about 6-inches long, and passed between two eye-fittings near the back of the U-shaped opening, well under the hatch when it was closed.
