Wrong engine oil!

oil aeration was a no no
My guess is that they want to "disburse or remove" combustion gases, like SO2, CO and CO2. Most all those combustion gases form acids when exposed to the H2O of combustion.
or
Perhaps lowers the Sulphur discharge on diesel engine exhaust testing for commercial engines.

Rob, remarkably consistent responses. I think you've set a record for the forum!
Now...care to share just HOW you did this???:):):)
Rushing from home to the boat for a quick afternoon of maintenance; I grabbed the 5 quart jug of car motor oil that was out in the open instead of the 4 qt. jugs of Rotella I had neatly tucked away in the cupboard. I'm glad I stopped to write down what I used; otherwise I don't know if I would have ever caught my mistake, not that it would have been terrible, after all.

Many years ago, a lady friend of mine had a Cutlass 350 Rocket V-8, which had an oil fill that looked vaguely like a radiator cap. She filled the crankcase with a 50/50 antifreeze/water mixture. The existing oil turned into brown mayonaise. We flushed it with Diesel, 20 weight cut with diesel, 30 weight and 10w-40. The car ran for several more years.
Wrong oil in the crank case? I'd change it before the warm weather, and not worry one bit.

The problem (or blessing?) is that it's almost always warm here, so I'll be changing it real soon now....

When it's 9 degrees and snowing, its hard to think that there are people who are warm and sunny. So I try not too ;)

I have been using a synthetic Oil for 2 seasons. Last I researched the differences, the "C" rating is now "J" only because of the contaminant removal for diesel rigs that run the highways.

It has to do with lowering the Sulfur content of refined diesel oils.
You can actually blend your own range of so called "weights" of Lube Oils.

I use 5 quarts of this...
https://www.samsclub.com/sams/mobil-1-5w-30-motor-oil-6-1-qt-bottles/159902.ip?xid=plp:product:1:1
and 1 quart of this...
http://rotella.shell.com/products/rotella-triple-protection.html

To cover the recommended Viscosity Range of my Volvo Penta 50 hp, at my warm water operating temperatures along the Gulf. [mine starts faster than my Ford Expedition gas engine]

With the synthetic, I have reduced Carbonization as proven by my used oil color and cold start smoking.
_____
As to refined diesel oils...
Oil Sulfur content for engine longevity has not been shown to be a factor.
Jim...
It might not be a good idea to mix oils which have different additives. You’ve got to assume the oil company knew what they were doing when they blended the additives. If you mix your own oils the proportions of additives will change and might not be as effective.

Yep! They want a "one stop shopping" product. I try to apply science and not assume.

Trying the best I can, I still mix new Oil with old used oil residue in the crankcase. Dang I even mix Mobil® oil with Shell® oil.;)
You may do as you assume.:)

For what it's worth: Amazon sells a gallon of the Rotella T5 15-40 oil for $15 (or a pack of 3 for $93, which makes no sense!). Shell has a rebate going until the end of December of $5/gallon. Makes the extra oil change a little less painful. :)

No Wal-Mart (or Sam's) close to us; guess we're way out in the sticks..... We do have a Costco, which is where I'm looking to buy my GC2 batteries real soon now.

Check Batteries plus bulbs website. They had an order on the web pick up at the store special. 230 AH 6V batteries for less than $100.each. I don't know if it is still running, but worth a check

Don’t see it there now, but I’ll keep checking them. There’s a store in Scott’s Valley, pretty close, so would be worth it, especially if they are better batteries than the Costco ones.

  • Dura cell? Code is CDP10047 =10% off
  • https://www.batteriesplus.com/productdetails/sligc115
  • $114.99 minus 10%
  • There are a number of threads on here about battery quality and price. I see trojan T-105 on the web for $170 each. a year ago they were more expensive. I am a weekender in a slip. Your use may require different decision making.

Just check on the spec's to make sure that you are comparing apples to apples.
That Dura Cell is a "combination" battery and not truly a deep cycle. It is rated at 230 ah, and weighs 64#
The Trojan T-145+ that we are using is a true deep cycle battery. Rated at 260 ah, and weighs 72#.
I view it as "more lead is generally a good thing" because in our usage we are really "buying lead".
:)
I believe that there are differences in plate thickness in the different battery types, also.

The price I see online is $159.99, - 10% coupon. Costco has a 208 AH GC2 battery for $88. Compared to what I've got now almost anything would be better!!

I agree. Unfortunately the T-125 is too tall for the C310, without some serious modifications. That's why I'm looking at the standard GC2 batteries.

@marchem if I understand this you are looking at
  • 2 6v batteries that when combined give you 230 ah and 12 volts.
  • if one of the batteries goes bad you are without power.:yikes:
  • so to create redundancy you need to buy 4 batteries. Now you have 460 ah
  • the weight of each battery is 64 lbs times 4 you have 256 lbs ( weight of a big crew member or two bikini wearing girls)
  • at a cost of $572.40 (discounted online)
  • or the Costco Duracell at 416 ah and $352:confused:
For about $300 you can get from Dyno Batteries 2 of their 12 V 30TMX Heavy Duty Deep Cycle batteries. 700 cycle thick lead plate 135 ah each, units. Gives you 2 12 volt batteries total 270 ah that in case one goes bad you still have a 12V battery source with 135 ah. The batteries weigh in at 65 lbs and fit in a Group 27 battery box. The pair weighing in at 130 lbs, or one fit vollyball player. ;)

Here is the spec page. I found it a good alternative when I was looking at GC2 batteries for a house system last year.
