When its -27 degrees with the wind chill, going outside ain't fun for me, so, to satisfy my boat addiction I play around with these kind of things.
Thought others might find this stuff interesting.

A neat little setup using a ASUS mini computer QM1.

Powerful small and cheap computer for education and projects.

Just got a Raspberry PI and a SenseHat. Was thinking of trying to use it's features (Temperature, Barameter, Compass, Moisture, etc.) and put it on my NMEA system. (Inland lake, so compass [+/- .2 degrees IIRC] more to keep direction from waving around while at the slip.)

Inner nerd?? I can't hack my way into my own email half the time.
I had the same issue until I used my inner nerd! I found and purpously placed a hack on the computer that will reveal all passwords ever used. Of course I disconnect the internet first and remove it afterward but hey it works for me.

As for the raspberry pi and things they are fun and endlessly adaptable. I coach a robotics league at my kids school and many of the 5th graders can already program and or code one. There amazing. Though last night in mentioning this thread I had to explain what ais was.:)

Not sure how I missed this thread...

I have been looking at Anduino and Pi ideas for a while. I also have an old 10" Dell Mini that would work as well.

I have a Lowrance Mark 4 fish/depth finder that has GPS functionality.
It also has NMEA output.
But how to get that data to a unit to use it ?

A NMEA Serial or WiFi interface is what is needed.
Consider you can DIY this stuff with a Raspberry PI or an Arduino+Wifi Shield, paying $250 for one of the ones you find for sale, is bit much IMO.

The cheapest option is the many Anduino projects out there for NMEA multiplexers and Wifi Bridges.
You can evidently build a NMEA Wifi bridge unit for under $25

That said, there is someone in Australia making well priced NMEA To Wifi Bridges and multiplex units. http://www.yakbitz.com/
The Yakbitz units are a great price for off the shelf gear, with no need to DIY.

I have a Yakbitz Bidirectional Bridge, and Lowrance NMEA cable inbound.
The depth data will be sent to a waterproof Android tablet, that I picked up on ebay, running Navionics HD.
I am currently running the same app on my phone, and will be with syncing between them.

The Nerd Arduino and Pi stuff will have to wait until later. :D

It was horrific. The wind howled at 12 knots all week long, and the crew constantly pressured me into consuming alcoholic beverages, against my will. They'd start on me first thing in the morning, saying the most hurtful things, like "how about an Irish coffee", and "how about a Bloody Mary", and "you can't drink all day if you don't start right now!"

Like some horrible nightmare, that kept repeating itself day after day after day. :(
