What is this doo-dad?

As a new owner, I'm finding many things I just don't know about... most I can figure out, others are a little harder. Anybody know why this is on my cable? It is clamping, but I can't see why, or where it would attach to on the boat.

:plus:
If that’s the throttle cable they might use it to keep the throttle from creeping to slower rpm’s.

Mahalo
Yep, that’s a casing compression clamp which controls the inner cable from being pulled back by the throttle spring.

That is NOT a Doo-Dad, it is a DAMMIT.. if ya don't have it you'll always be saying "Dammit, why is the engine slowing down!?"
I had a dog named Dammit!

Dammit... get off the couch! Dammit.... quit digging in the yard!

Don't think the dog would have been much help diagnosing why the engine was slowing down.

]I thought this is a Do-Hickey...very frivolous..

No, that's just a hickey (looks like several of 'em actually)...

If Doohicky doesn't strike your fancy, there's always gizmo, thingamabob or whatchamacallit (often abbreviated "whatsit")...or my personal favorites, thingamajig, often abbreviated just thingy.

How could I have forgotten about widget??? Nobody's mentioned gadget yet either.

Believe it or not, there are a whole bunch of subjects I like that have nothing whatever do with sanitation. I don't get much opportunity to discuss 'em on boating sites, but sanitation rarely comes up when I'm with my landlubber friends.

I would have pegged you for a theosopher but you said "nothing whatever do with sanitation". So, now I'm guessing skiing, from your jacket and dark glasses. That or mountaineer or Winter outdoor barbequer? Just about anything but crochet.
Am I close?

Origin

early 19th century: arbitrary extension of earlier thingum (from thing + a meaningless suffix). Thingumabob dates from the mid 18th century.

What? Wait! Gizmo is a game we three boys played all summer on the front porch in the 50s. Uses dice. Someone smartened up, boxed it, and called it Yahtzee. We still have not received our royalty checks.
