Mast winch?

Another question. What size halyard winch and base would be correct for mast mounting on a cat 22? I looked at several 22s at the marina and the early ones seem to have a more slender mast than my 79. I am not at all happy with ALL LINES LEADING TO THE COCKPIT. Does anyone have a winch and base that they have removed, that would be willing to sell it? _____Grant.

The c22 has less sail than the 18ft Sol Cat I learned to sail on.
I also don't see a need for halyard winches on a C22.

The earlier C-22's had a smaller mast. Not sure when, but the factory went to the stronger oval mast. Contrary to popular opinion, I have jib halyard and main halyard winches on the cabin top to make it easier to raise the sails after ripping my right arm tendons apart several years ago. Also, the racing C-22 I crewed on at the Nationals last week had halyard winches also, and we occasionally used them during the regatta.

I dont plan on one for the main. I have a downhaul on the gooseneck to handle that, but I think I want one for easy tensioning of the jib halyard. I am in no hurry, so I will try it for a while without. Thanks, ------Grant.

On alternative to using a halyard winch for trimming purposes (as opposed to just getting the sail up), and assuming your halyard is external, is to rig a 2:1 purchase that would allow you more options. I use it on my Nacra.. it is a quite common set up for mid to large dinghies and beach cats without winches.

Anyway... there is a cheek block on the mast that is the lower point of the tackle.... the halyard has a small single block tied into its length with a slip knot.... placed about a foot above the cheek block when the jib is at full hoist... there is also a cleat on the mast near the cheek block ... I use a small cam cleat with a wire fairlead.... on a larger boat like yours a "jam cleat with a horn" would work well, but I wouldn't use a clutch or power cleat in this application.

So... you hoist the sail... take the tail of the halyard through the cheek block, back up through the single block, then down to the cleat. Coil the remainder of the halyard and store it between the tensioned line and mast. With a horned cleat you can store it in the traditional way.

This extra purchase allows an easy, quick way of adjusting your halyard tension without a winch.

One other comment... You might consider rigging a Cunningham for adjusting main sail luff tension rather than the boom down haul.. It is much more effective.

I ended up with two of the old style oval masts from C-22's that were about to be cut up. Both had GIBB halyard winches mounted on teak bases (they say GIBB England). They are very small, about the same size as the the Forespar Marelon winches. 1/4" lines works fine, but I have my doubts about putting on 3 wraps of 5/16", might kink up. They pop up on Ebay fairly frequently.

my 1983 has one on the mast. it is so unnecessary that i actually wondered what it was for. i wonder if i can use it to raise and lower the mast itself.

"Sweating" the halyard is a simple trick to get much more tension than just pulling.

Service your masthead and if you're having issues with your main, clean your mast track. A properly maintained system will probably take no more than 10lbs of force to raise the main. Probably closer to 5lbs
