That sad, broken C22 nameplate - 3D printers to the rescue!

I was vexed as to how to replace the faded, broken pieces of the original scripted "Catalina 22"nameplate that remained attached to the coamings of my 1980 C22. Web and forum searches on finding reproductions or old inventory just made it seem all the more hopeless. I eventually found some art work on catalina22.org and thought I would just have a vinyl decal made from their very accurate .eps file. Then it hit me...3D printers are everywhere! I called the local UPS Store and they said they could do it. I am more than pleased with the result. Just thought I would share with my fellow C22 owners.

GREAT idea, never thought of that! Did you know that that "Catalina" script used was the same as the Pontiac Catalina?

Looks great! Just to verify, you used the dimensions from the sticker, or did you have the original plastic dimensions? I thought about this a few months ago as our local library allows you to make whatever you want with their 3D printer. but it was a low priority at the time.

Very cool. I thought about this too but have no idea how to use a 3-D printer and also had no clue that libraries and UPS store had them available for public use. What did they charge to print them?

The cost to have them printed was about $75. A little pricey but considering their are no more in existence, and they turned the project in about 2 hrs...I say, worth the money. I love StingySailor and DIY, but unfortunately I don't have the time (and sometimes skill) to undertake.

I will do a little research on what adhesive will work best to keep ABS on fiberglass and remain through a couple of Texas summers (and winters). I am open to suggestion, especially for cleaning/prepping the area prior to attachment.

What Sailbad's referring to is how I reproduced the classic emblems using Alumalite Mold Putty to make a mold and then cast the emblems out of epoxy resin.



The 3D printing method turned out great too but I prefer the beveled edges.

Beveled edges are easy to do with 3D printing.
It's just a matter of creating the correct cad file, and having it printed on a good printer (so you can't see the layering ridges).

One of the logos is broken on my boat and I plan to do the same thing.

Are the logos the same through all the years ?

My grandfather showed this puzzle to me years before Frank Zappa made it famous. Its classic.

I am not sure on the consistency of the logo design...I've seen lots of 22s and they all seem to be the same logo and I would hazard a guess the answer it never changed.

Catalina direct sells replacement logos. Their web page says the font has changed 3 times over the years.

Takes about 10 mins to do.
I made 3D models when I worked in Television.
I just need to measure the depth of the oem nameplate and the bevel.
I'll see if I have time this weekend to make one up.

The logo that CD has available is the same as my 87 model.
Looks like the older style boat used the one you and $tingy did.
I wonder what the 3rd logo looks like ?
