Interior arch below a deck stepped mast

Has anyone ever fixed an arch beneath a deck stepped mast? I have a Bristol 24 that I am replacing the bulkhead and I thought I would put a post beneath the mast. Any thoughts? On the material or any other advice?

Not the same exactly, but lots of people have written/described making beams to stiffen the Olson 30. They call it the Beam of Destiny... Google Olson 30 Beam of Destiny to find examples, and I'm sure write-up of how people have made them.... some good, some bad.

Anyway, perhaps a place to start.
